Who said this?

I came across this quote and was bemused as to who uttered these words.

"Modern men, obtuse to all Christian nomenclature, no longer feel the gruesome superlative that struck a classical taste in the paradoxical formula 'god on the cross.' Never yet and nowhere has there been an equal boldness in inversion: it promised a revaluation of the values of antiquity."

So who said it?

Friedrich Nietzsche said it in "Beyond Good and Evil", part 3 page 46.

Good on ya mate, so you were not suprised. It sounded to me like it could have been straight from Gorman's 'Cruciformity,' or Theissen 'Primitive Christianity.' At any rate you just won a pint, to be redeemed at ETS/SBL.

Totally -- that whole section is a great example of just how the foolishness of God appears to a world that doesn't know what to do with power/stewardship and that despises weakness. I wish I could claim that beer - but you'll have to come to Idaho to make good on it this year. Our church is in a place where my absence would do more harm than good at the moment, so you'll have to blog your heart out about your experience there and tell my twin I said hello!

Incidentally, buying Sameer a pint does not constitute prize fulfillment!

Welcome to blogging. Any one doing a Ph.D in biblical studies is a friend of mine! Make sure you do a posting on Hay's book, I'm curious.

Just to be clear, do I still get a free pint?

Sameer if I buy you a pint it must be done under the full recognition that you will savor it only as a gift/prize intended for your brother!

Agreed!
